Jerusalem Light Festival 2018
Posted in:

The Jerusalem Light Festival is one of the highlights of the event calendar in Jerusalem.

Each year artists prepare all sorts of light-based artworks - some interactive and some that just look cool, and the festival places these all over the Old City of Jerusalem.

2018 is a special year for the Light Festival as it is the 10 year anniversary of the event.

It’s an amazing opportunity to explore the Old City, particularly if you’re worried about security on a day to day basis, since the event is heavily policed throughout. There are usually multiple routes, defined by colours, for visitors to choose to follow and there’s more than enough so that it’s tricky (if not impossible) to see everything in one evening.

(The other time to do this is the ”Sounds of the Old City” music festival, usually held in the spring).

How much does entry to the Jerusalem Light Festival cost?

The Jerusalem Light Festival is free to enter - so you can just turn up and pick up a leaflet that will guide you around the event (or you can just as easily go exploring to see what you can find on your own). The crowds can get quite large as the festival often coincides with school holidays and generally the crowds tend to be a bit lighter on the first two days with the final Thursday often experiencing the highest traffic.

What Can I expect to see at the Light Festival?

The official website of the Jerusalem Light festival has a list of exhibits so that you can plan your visit. There are 4 paths, and depending on how fast you go/how big the crowds are, you generally won't have time to complete all of them in one night.

An archive of the previous installations organised by the year that they were exhibited can also be found on the festival’s website.

Where do I start?

There's no set entrance to the festival or the routes. We recommend starting at Jaffa Gate (just outside Mamilla Mall) as there is an information booth here that will hand out maps of all the routes on the night.
